Partner Choice Decisions and Destructive Couple Interaction as a Reenactment of Family of Origin Burdens

It remains a mystery why individuals sometimes repeat self-injurious behavior. Why would an individual with an alcoholic parent then marry three alcoholics in a row? Why would a woman who had been molested as a child choose a misogynist partner? Why do individuals require pain or shame to be sexually aroused? Why do couples recreate actively unfinished family-of-origin “burdens”? Logic would suggest that an individual might be repelled by repetition of negative early childhood experiences instead of drawn to them.

This webinar will examine and update “Repetition Compulsion” with a focus on the psychotherapist’s tools for mirroring core relational conflicts and reenactments. We’ll also share the steps to prevent destructive pair-bonding.
