An integrative model for treating sexual desire disorders was developed from the original work of the Masters and Johnson Institute, where the authors were on staff for many years. Sensual focus exercises and psycho-education were combined with couples therapy to address relationship conflicts, as well as individual trauma, dissociation, and attachment disorders. In this workshop, the focus will be on more contemporary clinical presentations of sexual abuse survivors struggling with sexual arousal difficulties, compounded with disorganized attachment and fears related to intimacy. We will discuss use of the co-therapy model with couples, wherein individual therapy with the partner in the room is used in conjunction with Internal Family Systems to work with dissociative parts stuck in the past and functioning as blocks to intimacy (devised by Richard Schwartz, Ph.D.). The primary focus in these sessions is creating sufficient safety and connection between the couple in order to allow sexual arousal to unfold.
