SUMMARIZED ABSTRACT

Relational Therapy has traditionally maintained a behavioral focus, aiming to modify communication patterns, conflict styles, anger, stress management, and more. While these changes are often necessary, they are seldom sufficient.

Trauma-based therapies have concentrated on developmental issues within the family and the original attachment environment that contributes to Complex and Episode Specific Traumas. When parents have not addressed legacy burdens including their own unresolved traumas, these issues pass down to their children. Often children tend to reenact unconscious patterns in their close relationships.

It is our belief that the most fully effective therapies require a tri-directional focus.

  1. Original Context
  2. Introjected Dynamics
  3. Unconscious Interpersonal Reenactment, to fully “break the trauma bond” and allow emergence of genuine intimate engagement.

In this livecast webinar, we’ll describe dysfunctional family attachment patterns and their manifestations in adult children’s intimate relationships. Our primary focus will be on interventions to facilitate removing blocks to close relationships. We’ll provide amelioration in deficits in differentiation and share templates for self-formulation, esteem, affect, ability to attune to others, mastery, and romance — each will be specifically delineated. Learn how anxious and avoidant strategies in dyads become the dance that maintains superficial levels of intimacy.

WEBINAR OBJECTIVES

  • To classify dysfunctional family patterns and the consequences to relational patterns in their children
  • To discuss intrapsychic and interpsychic blocks to closeness with couples
  • To outline how the therapist can optimally facilitate differentiation
  • To review the Ideal Parent Paradigm to facilitate forming a template for secure, romantic attachments
