WEBINAR ABSTRACT
Recent data suggests that many individuals presenting with a variety of addictive behaviors have in common a history of Disorganized Attachment. In this workshop, we will dissect Disorganized Attachment and the resultant lack of integration of a coherent sense of self and unintegrated internal working models, which leave the individual vulnerable to dissociation and affect dysregulation managed by addictive behavior

Interventions are targeted to: (1) developing coherent, cohesive, and collaborative narratives; (2) facilitate the grieving process; (3) recognize the idealization of (“loyalty” to) caretakers; (4) facilitate metacognition (the ability to reflect accurately on the behavior of the self and others); and, (5) understand the pressure to achieve (if present).

Internal polarizations related to taking care of others to get one’s needs met while simultaneously feeling victimized by and rageful at those who hurt them will be discussed.

Interventions targeting the capacity to form secure intimate relationships without the terror related to past injuries will be a primary focus of the workshop.
